and improve the reception at our cabin? Not looking for something that will cost a monthly subscription fee (we are only at the cabin for 30 days a year). Instead, we have an existing yagi antenna mounted on exterior of cabin and we need a device that will plug into it and offer more reliable reception in the cabin to our existing smartphones. Does Verizon have this and what is it called /cost?
Thank you! Currently, we are a US Cellular customer (they don't have a product like this) and may switch our five lines over to VZ for this reason alone.

If you have internet at the cabin i would suggest a network extender. Otherwise most phones do have a connection for an external antenna however verizon does not support using it because it's more for testing.

Yes, there are signal boosters available through 3rd parties and not the carrier. For example, Wilson is a well known manufacturer of such devices.
These devices can only boost weak signals. If there is no reception in a particular area, it still won't help. There would only be an initial cost to purchase and install the device, but no additional monthly cost.
Do you have Wifi available at your cabin ?? Your carrier may offer a device that would allow you to connect to Wifi and provide a local hotspot. I wish you the best of success. Let us know what happens.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

As veriztd says, a booster or amp does this -- hooks to some external antenna, and uses it to provide indoor service. The only large carrier I've heard of ever selling them was Alltel and before that Western Wireless, in recognition of the ruralness and lack of cell sites of the western deserts. Technically VZW can terminate a customers service for using an amp (an improperly installed amp can raise the noise floor, interfering with other users use of the cell site.) They certainly don't sell them. You buy it from a 3rd party like Wilson.

maximumsignal (Google it) is another good source of solutions for rural reception issues. They also have a reasonable return policy if the booster doesn't work.

Newer model phones generally don't have antenna jacks, so you have to deal with a booster amp instead of the less expensive (and more reliable) passive hookup. If you go to the Wilson website you can look up if they make an antenna plug and cable for your phone.
